PHILOSOPHY

The religious education program at San Secondo is founded on the belief that the primary responsibility for the spiritual growth and development of the children of the parish rests first and foremost with the parents.  They may delegate others to share the responsibility with them, but they do not relinquish it.  it is our belief, that the purpose of a catechist is to hand down to the students the deposit of Faith which the Apostles received from Jesus Christ, their divine Teacher and guaranteed by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.  Every catechist should be able to apply to himself or herself the mysterious words of Jesus... "My teaching is not Mine, but His Who sent Me (catechesi Trandendae, I, 6)...Our catechists are volunteering their time to assist you in teaching the Catholic faith to your children.

DRESS CODE

The same dress code required in church is required for class.  No shorts, halter or tube tops, bare midriffs or other inappropriate clothing is to be worn.  Skirts must cover the knees.  No pierced jewelry, except earrings for girls.

ABSENCES

If a student has more than four unexcused absences, he/she will not be permitted to advance to the next grade in the coming year.  To excuse an absence, your child's teacher must be notified.  Please do not call the DRE or the church office.  The student must also make up any work missed when absent; arrangements may be made with the student's teacher.

TARDINESS

To prevent excessive disruptions, students will not be admitted to class more than five minutes late. Expect strict enforcement of this rule.  Late students will wait outside the classrooms for classes to end.

DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE

The catechist must maintain atmosphere in the classroom conducive to learning and sharing the word of God.  Discipline problems arise when a student fails to respect the rights of others, and in so doing, disturbs the entire class taking away valuable instruction time.  The following procedures will be observed:

1.  The catechist will attempt to reconcile the problem with the student.

2.  If the student does not heed the catechist's warning, a note will be sent to the student's parents enlisting their assistance in the matter.

3.  Should the student's behavior not improve, the DRE will contact the student's parents nd will establish an action plan or a meeting time for the parents, catechist and the DRE.  The student will not return to class until the DRE and parents have discussed the matter.

4.  If the above procedures fail, the child and parents will meet with Father Marx before the child may return to class.

5.  As a last resort, the student will be asked to perform independent study and not return to class for the remainder of the year.

STUDENT OBLIGATIONS

Students are expected to:
  • attend Mass on Sunday in addition to attending class;
  • attend Mass onHoly Days of Obligation;
  • be on time for class;
  • do homework and class work assigned to them;
  • respect the authority of the catechist and respect their classmates;
  • not to chew gum or bring food to class.

PARENT OBLIGATIONS

"By reason of their dignity and mission, Christian parents have the specific responsibility of educating heir children in prayer, introducing them to the gradual discovery of the mystery of God and to personal dialogue with Him, it is particularly in the Christian family, enriched by the graces and offices of the sacrament of Matrimony, that from the earliest years children should be taught, according to the faith received in Baptism, to have a knowledge of God, to worship Him and to love their neighbor."

                                                          November 22, 1981

Our staff is eager to work with parents to help them fulfill this responsibility.  We ask the parents' cooperation in the following ways:

  • be sure your child attends Mass on Sunday in addition to attending class - class does not replace Mass:
  • be sure your child attends Mass on Holy Days of Obligation:
  • assist your child at home in learning prayers assigned to him/her and any other doctrinal assignments;
  • sign your child's homework when requested;
  • assure your child's prompt and regular attendance at all classes;
  • read and act promptly to any communication received from your child's teacher or the DRE;
  • advise the teacher if your child has a learning disability, reading or discipline problem;
  • attend any parent meetings and/or other special meetings during the year.

REQUIREMENTS

All students must meet certain minimum requirements in order to advance to the next grade in the coming academic year, particularly in the case of First Communion and Confirmation students.  These requirements may include knowledge of specific prayers and the passing of examinations.  Confirmation students have additional requirements (see below).  The teachers will keep you and your student informed of his/her progress.

FIRST CONFESSION and FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

A student maybe enrolled in the Second Grade First Communion classes if they are no older than a Fourth Grade student.  Otherwise, please enroll the student in the Older First Communion class.  Parents may be required to attend meetings prior to their children receiving these Sacraments.

CONFIRMATION

Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year process usually during the student's sophomore and junior year of high school.

We follow all requirements and guidelines as set forth by the Diocese of San Bernardino regarding preparation and reception of Confirmation.  This includes a yearly retreat as scheduled by the parish, at least 20 hours of service in the parish or community each year of preparation (10th and 11th Grades) and a personal interview the second year with Father Marx.  This interview is to assess the candidate's growth in the understanding of this commitment of the Faith as handed sown to us by Christ through His church.  Those students wishing to receive this Sacrament must have a basic knowledge of the Catholic Faith and be sincerely attempting to live out their faith commitment.  Regular attendance at the high school religion class is mandatory.

For those attending a Catholic high school, preparation time is limited to the second year of classes.

There will be an additional fee for the Confirmation retreat.  Information will be forthcoming.
